Monthly Meeting – Humanism in “Star Trek,” a presentation by Susan Sackett

Details

Join the Jefferson Humanists’ November monthly chapter meeting for Humanism in “Star Trek,” a presentation by Susan Sackett

Sackett worked with Star Trek creator Gene Rodenberry for 18 years and it was Roddenberry who introduced Sackett to Humanism. Sackett will speak on the Humanistic values that creator Gene Roddenberry incorporated into “Star Trek” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation”

Susan Sackett grew up in Connecticut and Florida and received both her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees from the University of Florida in Gainesville (1964;1965). After teaching elementary school in Miami for two years, she moved to Los Angeles, where she taught for a short time. But her lifelong dream of working in Hollywood persisted, and she quit her teaching job to work in the entertainment industry.

In August 1974, she began working with Gene Roddenberry, creator of the television legend Star Trek, serving as his personal executive assistant for over 17 years until his death in October 1991. She also served as his production assistant on the first Star Trek film and worked closely with him on the next five Star Trek movies. In addition, she served as Production Associate during the first five seasons of the television series, Star Trek: The Next Generation. Susan and her writing partner, Fred Bronson sold several stories and a teleplay to that series. She is the author of 12 books, including her recent Star Trek memoir, Inside Trek: My Secret Life with Star Trek Creator Gene Roddenberry (available as an eBook on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/Inside-Trek-Secret-Creator-Roddenberry/dp/1930709420).

Humanism is of paramount interest in Susan’s life. She joined the AHA in 1989. In 1994, Susan left California and relocated to Arizona, where she served as president of the Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix for 11 years — from 2000 to 2010. From 2005 to 2018, Susan served on the Board of Directors of the Washington D.C.-based American Humanist Association. In August 2011, she was elected to the Executive Committee of Humanists International, spending six years serving on their Board of Directors.

Susan has been a Certified Humanist Celebrant since 2001. Her celebrant website is www.secularweddings-az.com. Her personal website is www.insidetrek.com.

Join the Jefferson Humanists on Sunday, February 27th at 4:00 pm for this great presentation.

This program is hosted by Jefferson Humanists, a chapter of the American Humanist Association.

“If humans are to survive, they will have learned to take a delight in the essential differences between humans and between cultures. We will learn that differences in ideas and attitudes are a delight, part of life’s exciting variety, not something to fear.” ― Gene Roddenberry
