Jefferson Humanists will be meeting in-person again in June! Please join us for a live, in-person meeting at the Jefferson Unitarian Church on Sunday, June 26th at 4:00 pm for our monthly meeting. This is a hybrid event, so you can also join on Zoom to see the presentation and ask questions. See the bottom of this posting for instructions on registering to attend online.
This month, we have Dr. Sally Spencer-Thomas talking about the problems of suicide and what we can do to help those who are at-risk. Her talk is titled, “Hope Illuminated — Everyone Plays a Role in Suicide Prevention.”
Suicide is an international tragedy and communities around the world are pulling together to prevent its devastating impact. As a psychologist, mental health advocate and survivor of her brother’s suicide, Dr. Sally Spencer-Thomas sees the problem of suicide from many perspectives.
Because mental health conditions and suicidal thoughts are often invisible to the outside world, many people do not realize how common these challenges are. This presentation lets people know they are not alone when facing these challenges and provides proven strategies in building a comprehensive and sustained approach to saving lives.
Using science, stories, strategies – and even a touch of humor – Dr. Spencer-Thomas engages and inspires participants and invites them to “be bold” to lead their communities in psychological health and safety.
Spencer-Thomas will help attendees understand suicide risk, how to talk to people to people about suicide, and what you can do to help people you think might be anticipating suicide.
Dr. Sally” is a clinical psychologist and award-winning mental health advocate with personal experience losing her beloved brother to suicide. Her mission to give voice to people who have lived through suicide thoughts, attempts, and loss and to help those in despair rekindle a passion for living.
In addition to helping leaders and communities implement innovative approaches to suicide prevention, Sally is lead author on National Guidelines for Workplace Suicide Prevention, President of United Suicide Survivors International, and co-founder of “Man Therapy” (www.ManTherapy.org). She also co-edits the Guts, Grit & the Grind book series that provides men and the people who love them with tools to help them better understand and cope with life’s challenges.
