Part 2 – Does God exist?
The Little Book of Atheist Spirituality (LBAS) is a wonderful expression exploring the mind, heart, and spirituality of Atheism. If that seems confusing or contradictory then you might want to attend the Humanist Perspectives series where we will learn and discuss the author Andre Comte-Sponville’s treatment of these subjects. This is a very readable philosophy book with some humor and a smattering of beautiful quotes from western philosophers. Comte-Sponville emphasizes what is common, good, and true in our communion with others and then offers his thinking on spirituality. LBAS is an eloquent and thoughtful statement of the Humanist worldview in which even longtime humanists will find something new, useful, and uplifting.
LBAS is well worth reading, especially considering its manageable 206 pages. Joe Woodson and Bob Cook will be leading the book discussion and suggest that attendees would benefit from reading the book ahead of the discussions. Pre-reading the book is not required but there are 13 copies available free through local libraries and the Prospector in-state interlibrary loan system. This is a book you will want to read and reread – once is simply not enough to take in the joy of Andre Comte-Sponville’s insights.
About the author: Comte-Sponville is a French philosopher based at the Sorbonne. Nancy Huston has expertly translated his book to English.
LBAS discussions will follow the book according to the three main chapter titles:
· September 15 – Introduction and Can we do without religion?
· October 20 – Does God exist?
· November 17 – Can there be an atheist spirituality? and Conclusion:
love and truth.

The Jefferson Humanists Chapter of the American Humanist Association is very pleased to offer a regular explorations series on 3rd Saturdays, 10-12 AM, at Jefferson Unitarian Church (JUC). Each session will be slightly different and include several segments to showcase aspects of Humanism through a presentation, videos, movies, forums and explorations, followed by discussions. We will include time for participants to socialize and get acquainted, in keeping with our chapter goal of building community.
