This month, Dr. David Hurlbut, with NREL, will talk about the future of electric utilities.
Dr Hurlbut will discuss the future of grid decarbonization, providing an insider’s view of this evolution. He will share his personal experience with decommissioning the West’s largest coal plant and helping make Texas, a state famous for its oil and gas production, a leader in wind energy. Dr Hurlbut is the author of Creative Destruction and the Electric Utility of the Future. His talk will draw on the themes of this book, such as “the electricity business is changing so fast and so radically that what you think you know about it is probably wrong. A deep evolution is at work, never apparent in headlines or social media unless you know how the clues fit together. The old world is quietly giving way to a new one–disrupting the traditional utility culture, creating greater choices for customers, even affecting the industry’s response to global warming.”
He has been a senior analyst for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for more than 16 years, and prior to that was with the Texas Public Utilities Commission, where he monitored the ERCOT wholesale electricity market for anticompetitive behavior and oversaw the state’s renewable energy program.
