Dr. Michael McAteer will lead a team from the museum in the discussion of science, employing citizen scientists in research, and the crowd sourcing of research subjects. One goal of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science is to increase participation by the public in a full range of scientific research activities, so as to increase public interest and scientific literacy of the general community. Part of this effort is the museum’s Expedition Health exhibit where visitors can explore the adaptations the body would undergo if a person were to climb Mt. Evans and receive exposure to the increased altitude.
Dr. McAteer formerly served as Senior Scientist responsible for scientific support in whole blood collections and automated whole blood processing. He continues to consult for companies developing products for the blood banking industry.
Joining the presentation team by video is Dr. Nicole Garneau, a taste scientist and public speaker bringing taste science to the table. Her formal training in genetics and microbiology led her to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science where she serves as the Curator and Department Chair of the Health Sciences and Principal Investigator of the Genetics of Taste Lab.
Rounding out the team is Mr. Wesley Jones, Volunteer Engagement Specialist for the Museum’s Health Science Department. Using his backgrounds in physical education, theology, counseling, ethics, learning education, and psychology, he coordinates the volunteer program for Health Sciences at the Museum.
