Art Science Cultural Outing – The Coddling of the American Mind – Oct. 15, 2019
When: Tuesday, October 15, 2019, 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM
Where: Williams Village Center, Multipurpose Rooms, 500 30th Street · Boulder, Co – We’ll meet at the entrance to the Multipurpose Rooms. Look for Matthew Elisha, who will be wearing a Jefferson Humanists ballcap.
In October, we will travel to Boulder to enjoy “The Coddling of the American Mind: An Evening with Jonathan Haidt,” sponsored by the Benson Center for the Study of Western Civilization at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Something has been going wrong on many college campuses in the last few years. Speakers are shouted down. Students and professors say they are walking on eggshells and are afraid to speak honestly. Rates of anxiety, depression and suicide are rising. How did this happen? Eminent social psychologist Jonathan Haidt thinks the new problems on campus have their origins in three terrible ideas that have become increasingly woven into American childhood and education—ideas that are making it harder and harder for students to become autonomous adults who are able to navigate the bumpy road of life.
In this free, riveting lecture drawing from his New York Times bestselling book, Haidt will investigate the many social trends that have intersected to promote the spread of these untruths. Find out more about this talk at https://www.colorado.edu/center/benson/2019/09/16/coddling-american-mind-evening-jonathan-haidt.

—————————————– The AHA’s states that humanism is “informed by science, inspired by art” and that “values…have their source in human experience and culture.” With that in mind, the Jefferson Humanists have decided to start a new monthly program. Each month, we will enjoy a local cultural, arts or science event with our fellow humanists. We might go to a movie or play, attend a science lecture or museum exhibit, take in a festival, examine art galleries or listen to an author talk about their new book. Keep your eye on Meetup to see what is coming up for 2019! —————————————-
“…four rules for productive disagreement: – Frame it as a debate, rather than a conflict. – Argue as if you’re right, but listen as if you’re wrong (and be willing to change your mind). – Make the most respectful interpretation of the other person’s perspective. – Acknowledge where you agree with your critics and what you’ve learned from them.” ~ From The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure
