About the JH History
Jefferson Humanists was founded in 2014 and shortly thereafter was accepted as a chapter of the American Humanist Association. Our founding leaders, led by Chuck Mowry, helped establish JH legally as a 501 (C3), created a governing board and organization, and started offering programs. Between 2014 and 2020, Jefferson Humanists has become an active organization, offering multiple opportunities for participation. Currently, you can participate in the activities listed below and new opportunities arise frequently to make friends, learn new information, and serve others. Chapter meeting meets monthly on the 4th Sunday of the month. The typical program begins at 4 pm with a wine and appetizer reception followed by a Humanist Moment, a presentation, and an opportunity for discussion. Humanists Perspectives, meet monthly, exploring Humanist ideas through books, videos, and speakers, with ample time for discussion. Freethinkers Reading Opportunity Group (FROG) is our book club, meeting monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books on Humanist themes. Jefferson Humanists also maintains a library of fiction and non-fiction books and videos on Humanist themes. Our monthly hike is an opportunity to explore nature with friends on local hiking trails. The Humanist Heathen Happy Hour (4H) meets monthly, typically in a local Jefferson County craft beer location, to share friendly talk and ideas. The monthly Cultural Outing visits cultural events in the Denver such as museums, films, artistic presentations, and lectures and discusses their meaning. The monthly game night is a time to test your skill at games with others of like minds. Finally, on a regular basis, Jefferson Humanists collects toiletries and other helpful items for people in distress and volunteers to help at local non-profits such as The Action Center.
