If you’re like me (over 30) you’re probably saying, what’s a Discord channel? Discord is a social media platform which allows communication through voice calls, video calls, and text messaging. Communication can be private or take place in virtual “communities” – otherwise known as group chats. Originally it was used by gamers to play online games with others located anywhere in the world.
Discord is now being used to build communities. It is a way for friends to chat, without having to make a phone call or set up a Zoom meeting. It is also a way to set up meetings for large groups.
The Jefferson Humanists are a chapter of the AHA. So the AHA’s Discord channel has a lot to offer JH members. There are sections of interest to all Humanists including court news, legislation, and church/state separation. There is a question and answer section for people new to Humanism, and a section where people can post about their journey to humanism.
I recently attended a talk on the AHA’s Discord channel called How Humanists Are Defending Our Secular Democracy . The sound quality was excellent, and there were over 60 other Humanists from around the country also listening in. It was inspiring, and I’ll prepare a separate blog about the talk.
If you are interested in looking into Discord, you must email discord@americanhumanist.org to ask for the link that will allow you to join. Once you receive and click on that link, you’ll need to fill out a short form to join, aka, create an account. It’s really simple. Once you’re on Discord, prowl around!
You can find more information on the American Humanist Association’s Support for AHA Discord page.
