Join the Jefferson Humanists on July 25 for a firsthand account about some of the stark impacts that home schooling has on children, families, and our society at large.
Kelley Richey will talk about her lived experience growing up in a rural and religious area of Kentucky often referred to as the “Bible-belt”. As one of six children, she was home schooled by her mother until high school graduation time. She was entirely self-taught in high school while
holding down a full time job at a local horse farm, and took her very first exam (the ACT) at the age of 17. In 2019, after fits and starts, she completed a college degree. Kelley transformed herself from a child who was indoctrinated in Creationism and Young Earth theory, to a nonreligious adult who bases her beliefs upon logic, reasoning, and the scientific method.
Kelley is a passionate advocate for effective, common sense laws protecting children across the country. To further this cause she and her sister started “The Family Ties Podcast. Kelly, who lives in the Denver area, was referred to us by the national Coalition for Responsible Home
Education, a non-profit based in Boston, MA.
Kelley’s talk will cover:
– A brief history of homeschooling’s inception
– The religious background and foundations of the homeschool system
– Discussion of the evolution of homeschooling during the pandemic
– The breakdown of non-religious homeschoolers compared to religious homeschoolers
– Most significant flaws of the institution
– Reasons for hope and what the future of homeschooling looks like
– The laws surrounding homeschooling and where the rest of society fits into homeschooling
This program is hosted by Jefferson Humanists, a chapter of the American Humanist Association.
