Join the Jefferson Humanists’ June monthly meeting for the presentation, Ethics in Engineering, by Amelia von Gemmingen. As a teacher, Amelia found that many students believed that they were “just designing” systems, program, artifacts, etc. and were not responsible for the ethical consideration of those systems and their use or impact on the community. Langdon Winner, current Chair of Humanities and Social Sciences in the Department of Science and Technology Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, presented a paper in 1980 discussing the impact of ethics for many areas, and this paper provides a good starting point for this discussion.
