Humanist Moment: For the July 28 Humanist Moment, Lindy Baer will report on the American Humanist Association’s (AHA) National Conference. He will highlight some of the significant initiatives and activities of the AHA.
Program: Annie Laurie Gaylor, one of the founders of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF – https://ffrf.org), will present a talk titled, “Battle of Church & State.” She will focus on why church/state separation is important for everyone, particularly women, and what FFRF is doing to protect that right. Gaylor has traveled the United States and the world speaking about this subject.
Annie is currently Co-President of FFRF with her husband, Dan Barker (they have been Co-Presidents since 2004). She has been plaintiff in or overseen multiple state/church lawsuits and actions by FFRF. She has been very involved in a number of women’s causes, and was co-chair for more than a decade of the Feminist Caucus of the American Humanist Association. Her book, Woe to the Women, The Bible Tells Me So: The Bible, Female Sexuality and the Law, first published by FFRF in 1981, is in its 4th printing. Biography: Freedom From Religion Foundation Co-President Annie Laurie Gaylor, a third-generation freethinker, co-founded the Freedom From Religion Foundation with her mother Anne Nicol Gaylor as a college student in 1976. She served as editor of Freethought Today, FFRF’s newspaper, from 1985 to 2009. Her book, Woe to the Women: The Bible Tells Me So, first published by FFRF in 1981, is in its 4th printing. In 1988, FFRF published Betrayal of Trust:
– Clergy Abuse of Children, , the first book documenting widespread sexual abuse by clergy. Her 1997 anthology, Women Without Superstition: ‘No Gods, No Masters,’is the first collection of the writings of historic and contemporary women freethinkers. A 1980 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Journalism School, she was an award-winning student reporter and recipient of the Ken Purdy scholarship. After graduation, she founded, edited and published the Feminist Connection, a monthly advocacy newspaper, from 1980-1985. She first joined the FFRF staff in 1985. With her husband Dan Barker, she has been co-president since 2004. In the late 1970s, her student protest ended commencement prayers at the UW- Madison. She has been plaintiff in or overseen multiple state/church lawsuits
and actions by FFRF. Dan and Annie Laurie have appeared on a variety of TV news shows, including “Oprah,” “O’Reilly,” “Good Morning America,” Univision, CNN and FOX news segments, CBS Evening News and ABC World News Tonight. She is also volunteer co-administrator of the Women’s Medical Fund of Wisconsin, considered the longest, continuously operating abortion funding
charity in the nation, which helps about 1,000 low-income women in Wisconsin pay for abortion care. She and Dan, who live in Madison, Wis., have one daughter.
We will serve appetizers from 4:00 to 4:30, then start the program. A small donation is suggested for the food and wine. The program will include announcements and a Humanist Moment before the presentation begins.
